Attaching a Ledger Board

I have a poured concrete basement. On top of the walls, I can see a board running the length of the wall. I'm assuming that is the sill plate. On top of the sill is the house rim board. If that is all correct, I should be able to outside, find the top of the foundation wall, measure up 1 1/2 inches ...

Mudroom / Laundry Room

I have a mudroom that doubles as a laundry room. I have a front-load washer and dryer. The electric (110 and 220) and water hookups are above the w/d. I'd like to build a washer/dryer pedestal. However, the height of the pedestal base would cover-up the water and electric. Above the w/d, I plan to b...

Re: Adding flood lights

OK. It's in the attic. I haven't been up there yet. Assuming there is no junction box, I can put on in and run the new light from that junction?

Adding flood lights

I have flood lights on three sides of my home. I'd like to add another set of floods over the driveway. I can trace the wire in the attic from the existing lights. Can I splice a wire run into that light to run the new light?

Re: Garage door opener

Thanks for the quick reply. I leaning towards getting a belt drive opener since it's quieter but I've not heard one in action. Are belt drive openers quieter and/or more reliable than chain drive openers?

Garage door opener

Hi Shannon, Thanks for putting the garage door video on Youtube. Couple questions. I have an aluminum (builder grade) garage door that has a lock. Do I need to remove the locking mechanism so the garage door opener will work? What are your thoughts on the rated HP versus actual HP with garage door o...

Re: Truing up basement walls

Almost forgot. Do you scribe a line on the concrete floor and true it up to ceiling (floor joists) using a plumb bob? Is there an easier method?

Re: Truing up basement walls

Got a couple more questions. Couldn't I keep the builder insulation and add more insulation between the studs to get a higher "R" rating for the basement? I watched your video on framing wall. How do you tie in the top plate if you're building a wall from floor (concrete) to ceiling (floor joists)? ...

Truing up basement walls

Hi Shannon,

I'm looking for some advise on ensuring basement walls are plumb and square? I have poured concrete walls with an insulation wrap attached to the concrete. How far from the concrete wall should I plan to erect the framing?

Thanks!

Portico

I'm planning to build a portico over my front door. I have a red-brick exterior. I'm not sure where or how to secure the portico to the house. Any info would help, suggestion, website, etc? Thanks.

Square Feet to Linear Board Feet

Hi Shannon, I was planning to spray-foam insulate my bathroom after I saw your video. However, after doing some research into the various products out there, I couldn't figure out which one to use. Most I found quoted a coverage area using LBF or Linear Board Feet. Some were LBF at a certain depth, ...

Backerboard for small bathroom

Hi Shannon, I have a small 5' x 8' bathroom that I'm planning to demo to the studs. The shower and parts of the other walls are tiled. Going forward, I plan to tile the shower and paint the remaining wall sections. Should I use backboard throughout the bathroom since it a relatively small space? Tha...

MDF Baseboard Molding

Hi Shannon,

I plan to use MDF baseboard molding in my bathroom. I've read that MDF doesn't do well in damp/wet areas. However, if I prime/paint the molding, I should be good, right?

Thanks

That paint is $65 a gallon! How Behr, Valspar, etc? Any good choices with the big-box store type paints?

Paint

Hi,

I'm looking for some recommendations for bathroom paint. Should I apply a primer coat? What's a good primer? Oil or Latex paint? Eggshell, satin, or semi-gloss finish?

Thanks!
