Re: New vinyl siding over windows/doors

Alrighty! Thanks again for the quick reply. It's been cold and windy here lately (well, except for the 30°C day on Sunday), so haven't got much accomplished. Good thing I can ask you all sorts of questions!!

Re: New vinyl siding over windows/doors

Oh yeah, I was going to ask about the j-channel that goes on top of the drip cap. The nailing strips on both the drip cap and j-channel don't line up. Do I have the j-channel right on top of the drip cap? Then I'm nailing through the upper section of the drip cap...and missing the nailing holes.

New vinyl siding over windows/doors

Hi, me again. :) I'm putting drip cap over the doors and windows today. There is only 3" between the top of the windows/doors that were built out, and the metal soffits. We had 1.5" styrofoam insulation added to the exterior and the existing windows replaced and built out. I'm just thinking ahead on...

Re: Vinyl siding: How loose is loose?

Thanks Shannon. My nails are straight, but if anything, maybe a little too close to the nailing strip. I had a friend tell me to leave them out further, and as long as their below the surface of the siding, they'll be ok.

Vinyl siding: How loose is loose?

I started my first real siding project this week, trying to do all my homework beforehand. I consider myself fairly handy, given the right tools I can do a good job. Here’s my question, because I’ve not done this before: after you put up a 12’ length of siding, how loose should it be? I’ve tried to ...

Re: Elevation change

No, not mixed up...😁

I think I’ll take your first suggestion and keep it simple. Luckily I have some time before the nice weather hits to mull this over some more.

Thanks for your help and I’ll ask more questions when they pop up,

Re: Elevation change

Sorry, I wondered if I made sense - don’t know the proper terminology I guess. A vinyl siding panel looks like it’s made of two boards. By “cutting it in half,” I meant just cut off one of the “boards.” When we renovated the house, we had the contractor add 1.5” of styrofoam on the exterior, so the ...

Re: Elevation change

Thanks Shannon. Yes, that makes sense. I thought that might be one way to do that, using J-channel in place of a starter strip. The siding I have is 9”. Your flashing over the styrofoam is a good idea too - covers the foam. But I’m not sure if there’s enough foam showing so I can use a full width pa...

Elevation change

Hello, and thanks for this forum! I'm planning on installing vinyl siding on our newly renovated house soon - as soon as the weather warms up a bit. We received quotes which, when all things considered, are so high I'd rather pay myself that kind of money! I consider myself "handy" and I've been enc...
