Re: Shed Window Project

I was able to cut out the section of 2 x 4 for the header + sill with a cordless circular saw, hand saw and chisel(had a small one that worked). No new tools needed to be purchased. Have to shim a little under the sill, but turned out pretty well. Still have to nail the header and sill in place. The...

Re: Shed Window Project

Hi A. Spruce,
I thought about a short crosscut hand saw. I may have enough room to do that.
Glad to know that the wall doesn't need to be supported.

My siding is LP SmartSide Lap Siding.

A circular saw plus a jig saw for the corners should do it.

Appreciate the help.

Shed Window Project

On the backside of my projected window opening I will need to cut out part of a wall stud to install a header and window sill. My studs are 16" OC and the height of my wall is 81" from floor to top of the top plate. I have installed a new stud for the window installation. Two questions please. 1. Wh...

Re: Cutting an Opening in LP Smartside Lap Siding

I didn't think of the short chisel. Was looking at the Makita TM3010CX1. I do have a stud to cut out on the back side. Appreciate the reply Shannon. Will post a pick of the backside for another question.

Cutting an Opening in LP Smartside Lap Siding

Planning to install a window in my shed that was built last year. I will be cutting a 24" x 24" rough opening with my circular saw and jig saw. Then I want to remove ~ 4" of the lap siding so I can trim out the new window with the same trim used on the shed building. I need a different tool to cut i...

Re: Window Installation is a Shed Building

My wall studs are placed at 16" OC. So, I will have to cut one stud. Thank you A. Spruce and Shannon.
Love your videos Shannon. Do you have one that would show how to cut out and frame the window opening?

Window Installation is a Shed Building

Looking for some guidance for installing a window in my new shed building. It's about 98% finished. Working on organization now. This was a ginormous project for me, complete with lots of mistakes.Lol. A lot of time and sweat equity. https://www.house-improvements.com/forums/download/file.php?mode=v...

Thanks Shannon! How did you make the ~1 ½" cut out on the OSB? Jig saw?

Gusset Supports Shed Wrap Up Video

Hi Shannon, Happy Memorial Day weekend to you. I have a question about the OSB supports you spoke of the the shed series wrap up. Do you have the dimensions you used for those pieces. I will be working on that aspect today, as well as finishing up my rafter install. I did not search the forum for th...

Re: Roof Structure for Shed Building

many people ask that and the answer is this: that half thickness deduction is calculated using the slope of the roof measured across the 2x6 not measure simply straight across the 2x6. In this case however because our slope was not very steep and only one thickness of ridge beam was needed for our ...

Re: Roof Structure for Shed Building

That was a couple years ago but I'm sure I did. I would have to watch to be sure also, lol In process of watching the video. A couple of points to clarify please. You were using 13/16" as half the thickness of the 2 x 6 when making the rafter calculations. Why didn't you use 3/4"??? Isn't the actua...

Re: Roof Structure for Shed Building

You will be fine with 24" o.c. Besure to watch the shed wrap up video to see the extra support I added to the rafters as well that was not mentioned in the roof video. Great! I plan to review the video carefully before I purchase my materials. In the latter part of the video(have not watched yet) d...

Roof Structure for Shed Building

In the shed video part 3, you used rafters on 24" centers. If the length you selected had been 12' instead of 8' would you have still used 24" on center rafters? The shed I am building is 8' W x 12' L with a 5' double door opening on the front gable wall. I am at the point where I am ready to build ...

Re: Hinged 48" Door Instead of Roll Up Door on Shed Video

Shannon, I'm surprised that a door with no frame has withstood the test of time, especially OSB. Tacoma - You are really only limited by your imagination and abilities. A door can be any size you need it to be, if you need a 5' door, go for it. If you don't need a 5' door, then I think you're going...

Re: Hinged 48" Door Instead of Roll Up Door on Shed Video

Because it's cheaper and faster to build your own door with a couple 2x and a sheet of siding, this is usually the preferred method and should not result in any kind of reduced performance or longevity. Back in my shed building days, for efficient use of material, one sheet, was the door, and one s...

Re: Hinged 48" Door Instead of Roll Up Door on Shed Video

A. Spruce wrote:48" for a shed door is not too much, you will want to use 3 hinges. Normal wall framing for the door opening, that is to say, 2 studs per side of the opening.
Great. Thanks for the help! Appreciate that.

Re: Hinged 48" Door Instead of Roll Up Door on Shed Video

I built sheds very early in my career and we made our own doors, simple 2x4 frame with a full sheet of siding for the exterior skin. Surface mounted T or Strap hinges were used to hang the door in the opening once the door was built. The opening was framed 3" narrower than the sheet of siding, so 4...

Re: Hinged 48" Door Instead of Roll Up Door on Shed Video

A hinged door will be different for sure. I would assume you will have a door with a frame so a rough opening of 50" wide by 82-1/2" high should do it ? Personally a 48" wide single door can be kind of a pain you may want a double door set up? Hi Shannon, My shed is 8' W x 12' L. The walls are 80 ½...

Hinged 48" Door Instead of Roll Up Door on Shed Video

I have three walls up and getting ready to work on the front wall with a door. I will not use the roll up door, instead I will use a hinged door.
Would the materials and instructions be the same for installing a hinged door?

Shed Floor Design

Hello from Houston, Texas, I am new to the forum. Loads of good information! Appreciate being able to join. I am planning on building a backyard shed 8'W x 12'L with a door in the narrow side. I have watched the first shed video showing the 2 x 4 floor joist design. At the end of that video, there w...
