Re: Deck Skirting

Thanks, I appreciate the advice.
Your are probably right about the rocks migrating.
As for the grass, I use RM43 in the paver area and nothing will ever grow there. One treatments lasts about a year.

Re: Deck Skirting

Work has been super busy so I am not online much but here are some updates pics of the skirting in progress. I decided to add gravel and retaining wall bricks and so far so good. I am very pleased with the looks of it. Not sure why they are not facing properly.

Re: Deck Stairs

Ok, regarding the quantity of stringers used on my stairs. What will be the correct number of stringers used for a 6ft opening?

thanks!

Re: Deck Skirting

Are there any specific rules on dimension requirements? Obviously, it needs to be at least 6 feet wide but I was thinking maybe 3 feet in towards the deck?

Re: Deck Skirting

I may dig down and make a cement landing or something.
Pic makes the slope look worse than it is.

Re: Deck Skirting

Here are the pics.

Also going to start thinking what / how to do regarding my stairs. I left a 6 foot opening because I liked how a wider stair opening looks.

thanks.

Re: Deck Skirting

Hi folks, sorry for the delay in responding, when the school year starts, my time for projects gets a little limited. As for the skirting, I decided to combine a wooden frame with (decorative) bricks. My wife says I overdo stuff but once I have a mental image of how I want something to look or end u...

Re: Deck Skirting

Yes, that sounds like a good idea and yes, my dogs would figure out a way to push around it. Seems like they love laying UNDER the deck...

Re: Deck Skirting

I've done it two ways. 1 - Poured a small pierblock in place with a wood pad or metal bracket to attach to a rail between posts. 2 - set a cinder block behind the rail to keep the rail from flexing. You don't necessarily need to attach the rail to the pier/block, it just kind of depends on your sit...

Re: Deck Skirting

I thought about blocks too. Maybe liquid nails the 2x4 onto the blocks?

Re: Deck Skirting

That sounds like a pretty good idea. Feel a little stupid not thinking of something like that! I figured it needed to be more sturdy but i guess pounding some of those 2x2 framing stakes in the ground a bit would be sturdy enough.

Deck Skirting

Good morning. I have completed the deck and now am looking at adding the skirting around it similar to the one in the video. My deck is not on a concrete slab (over grass/dirt) so I'm looking for ideas of what I can add at the bottom to give the skirting boards some support at the bottom. thank you ...

NEW QUESTION

On one side of my deck, the last joist where my deck boards would be screwed down is about 3" in from the outer edge of the boards. Is that ok or should I add more blocking?

The other side is only about an inch away so I'm comfortable with that side....

Re: Deck Help!

Sorry for the late reply. I got it figured out. Seems I was worried about nothing as my wife was happy to point out. Both rear posts match the distance from the house and there isn't really a way of getting them closer so it all worked out and my ocd is happy.

Deck Help!

Ok, it looks like I have gotten myself into a bit of a problem with my new deck. I got all the blocking done today and I stared to figure out where I want my railing posts and stairs and have come up with what I think is a problem. If I install the back corner railing posts (closest to the house) in...

Re: Deck Questions

Thanks for the info. I've been trying to get as smart as I can on building this deck and I just started yesterday. I'm taking my time and hopefully, it will turn out as planned.

Deck Questions

Shannon, I watched your building a deck video and it is a great tool that has helped me alot. I have a few questions regarding the hand rails. How tall (long) are the 4x4 posts used for the handrails? How high up did you position the bottom rail? You mentioned that you used a 2x6 that you ripped in ...

Re: Deck questions from a new guy

Do you mean 2 2x8s for the beams AND joists or just the beams?

Also, after looking at my design image, I have a beam every 10 ft, should I add more beams, say every 5 feet? I don't want this thing to be springy.

thanks!

Re: Deck questions from a new guy

Shannon, thanks. I'm sorry for the confusion, when I was describing the 2x6s running N-S/E-W, I was referring to the pergola structure I was building above the 4x4 posts for the tin roof. Yes, my plans (for the deck) are for the beams to run N-S. My initial thoughts were: 4 beams total. The two outs...

Re: Deck questions from a new guy

Ok, I managed to work this up so you can see what I'm dealing with and what my plans are. I hope I attached this correctly. Any advice on type, length and quantity of beams to use and how many deck piers are recommended. The 4x4 posts would be buried 3ft with about 6" of gravel for drainage. I live ...

Deck questions from a new guy

Hello everyone and Happy Fathers Day. Your U-tube videos led me here so I thought I would ask some (stupid) questions as I'm in the planning stages of a deck for my back yard. I was planning on using deck piers that are available at the typical big box stores. I don't know how far apart I should spa...
