Re: Rim joist insulation with rigid foam and Roxul

Will do My read of the Ontario code suggests it might not fly. Looks like it always wants vapour barrier over the batt insulation. Perhaps it's more for protection and would not need to be sealed if there is sealed rigid foam behind it. 9.25.2.3 (7) Except as permitted in Sentence (8), insulation an...

Re: Rim joist insulation with rigid foam and Roxul

Hi all

Does anyone know if this rigid foam / Roxul method is acceptable by code in Ontario?

I just spent 2 hours fighting with fibreglass, accoutic sealant and vapour barrier around engineered floor joists. It didn't go well....

Re: Drywall installation

I was mostly concerned the joint might be prone to cracking if I didn't have edge support along the top. If that's not the case, I don't think I'll bother putting any blocking. One less thing to do. Lol

Re: Drywall installation

Hi A related question Is is absolutely necessary to have edge support for the top edge of the wall drywall? Typically the top plates provide the edge support but in my build the ceiling is cathedral and the slope of the ceiling drywall intersects the wall just below the top plates. Should I add addi...

Re: Block foundation wall question

Thanks folks. Ultimately decided to epoxy in 5 12" rebar as pins. I figured an hour and $30 in materials, it's cheap insurance.

Block foundation wall question

Hi I'm adding a den addition behind my attached garage and have some concern about the existing foundation wall. It is currently hollow 8" block 1.5m from footing to top of wall. The garage slab is 0.1m below the top of wall. The addition will have a full basement so this existing block wall will be...

Re: Rigid insulation protection

It's vinyl siding

Not sure I understand the insulation question. This is 2" rigid foam R10 installed on the exterior of the foundation wall.

Rigid insulation protection

Building a new foundation that will have 2" rigid insulation on the exterior of a poured wall.

What are good options to finish and protect the insulation that is exposed between the finished grade and the start of the siding?

Dropped a 4' wrecking bar on my baby toe wearing sneakers the other day. I impressed my brother inlaw with my vocabulary and even cussed in French a bit for added effect.

OSB vs Plywood

Seems OSB is becoming more common in subflooring and roof sheathing than plywood.

The internet has plenty of debate but would welcome opinions here on which is better.

OSB would save me $1200 on my project but I do not want to cut corners if plywood is still the better choice.

Re: Membrane installation for New Window

I have a similar situation coming up on my addition. The drawings call for OSB, then 1" rigid foam and then building wrap. Would it be acceptable to leave the foam in place up to the rough opening and seat the nailing flange on top of it?

Basement moisture barrier

Apologies if this topic is already covered but was wondering if a moisture barrier is still required on the inside of concrete foundation walls if the walls have 2" continuous rigid foam on the exterior.

Bumping this Radon discussion

As of Jan 1 2017 the Ontario code has introduced mandetory soils gas control measures for new houses.

Does anyone know if this applies to additions as well?

Re: Fire Wall

Thanks,

Anyone know if there are alternatives to drywall?

Maybe some sort of coating I can apply to the plywood that would make it fire retardant?

Fire Wall

I have a garage that shares a common side wall with the house and am now planning a familyroom addition behind garage so the rear wall will now also be common with the house. Gasproofing and fire retarding are required by code and type X drywall on the interior of the garage is the most common metho...
