Re: Terminating or eliminating an electrical outlet

I agree with you A Spruce...but that being said, you might also agree that most Electricians are not necessarily Flooring or subflooring experts....so, for me, Flooring and subflooring is not a big deal as that’s all I do most days...I am not electrician and don’t pretend to be one... So as much as ...

Re: Terminating or eliminating an electrical outlet

Thanks. That’s what I thought. I actually had an electrician out here and wanted him to remove it completely and gave him permission to tear up the subflooring or the drywall below in the garage, and he hemmed and hawed and ended up not wanting to do it .... The electrical had the round metal face p...

Can I terminating or eliminating an electrical outlet in my floor

Good evening! I’m installing some new T&G strand woven carbonized bamboo flooring above grade (2nd floor above a garage) and when I pulled the carpeting up I noticed they had a telephone jack and electrical outlet in the subflooring. Home was built in 1993 (California). I want to properly remove thi...

Re: Best Window Treatment for Room Darkening?

Yup blackout curtains firstly (relatively inexpensive.) You can generally find them at most of the DIY box stores or on Amazon...pick the ones with the best reviews (and use Shannon’s amazon link if you do... : ). Then there are dual cell top down bottom up black out window treatments (can be expens...

Re: Wood Siding Options for Strong Sun Exposure?

To SJPSF- I googled and found a website called: Sidingauthority.com Which might have some helpful info... I’ve heard of a company experimenting with some kind of gas which is introduced into wood which sort of pseudo-carbonizes it. As you know, California has low VOC laws in place, so we don’t have ...

Re: Wood Siding Options for Strong Sun Exposure?

I’m dabbling in using the James Hardie V Rustic (fibre cement). It is the thicker one (5/8” thick) and basically the equivalent of tongue and groove for installation. VERY labor intensive, but I suspect it will look nice when thru. I’m replacing it as I go along a bit at a time (not the normal way t...

Re: Replacing a corner 4 x 4 corner support stud

BTW—if anyone needs helpful tips or suggestions on installing solid wood flooring, esp. tongue and groove, nail down or glue down, I’m very solid at that, and can simplify and explain the process. I also have a lot of helpful and easy router tips and tricks in order to make your own transition piece...

Re: Replacing a corner 4 x 4 corner support stud

I must say thank you again to Shannon for his amazing installation videos. I had an extra window (I’m replacing windows as we are sheathing and siding) so I threw caution to the wind and literally was watching Shannon’s window installation videos while I was installing, and finished installing it (t...

Re: Replacing a corner 4 x 4 corner support stud

(And) the same space to the left of it too...prolly floating in an addition 4 v 4 to the left might be better you think since the left side is a longer expanse to support the roof you think?...

Re: Replacing a corner 4 x 4 corner support stud

I’d agree with you on that

I floated in space about 12”-18” to the right of the rotted 4” x4” so I could add a 4 x 4 there as additional support until I replace the entire 4” x 4” on the corner

Re: Replacing a corner 4 x 4 corner support stud

I discovered the rot the day before the two weeks straight rain we’ve had here in Cali, so I hastened to temporarily sheath with plywood and somewhat frame out to keep out any further damage from rains, knowing that I will need to replace the 4 x 4. Balcony is on 2nd floor. I will post three more pi...

Replacing a corner 4 x 4 corner support stud

Hello Shannon and everyone, First of all I want to say how much I appreciate your informative and helpful house improvement videos...You Rock!! I am replacing some 35 year old fiberboard siding and sheathing (the home builder wrapped open studs with tar paper did not sheath prior to siding). Anyway,...
