How to mask-off tile work before painting

Wondering if Frog tape or some other method will 'conform' to grout lines and otherwise protect travertine tile backsplash from paint?

Re: Best Window Treatment for Room Darkening?

you might start with window tinting film - but it establishes a baseline that you can't control (without opening the window)

otherwise, it's as said above

Re: Floor refinishing sequence

I think; ceiling, trim, wall, floor is what I read most often. if it's his first DIY for this stuff, try to start inside a closet or behind a door - by the time you get to the most visible part of the room, you're more likely to be familiar with tools/technique. I suppose there could always be speci...

Re: Outside AC unit stops spinning after few minutes

look for reviews (Yelp, Google, Angie's List, etc) and you might consider asking if they have financing available.

Re: Outside AC unit stops spinning after few minutes

not ideal suggestions but - does the unit sit in direct sunlight? maybe try to rig a shade/canopy over it - stay 2ft away from the sides if possible for airflow.

you could try a 'mister' set-up nearby - but over time you can get mineral scale built-up on the fins I think?

Re: Recommendations for a bump-proof exterior door lock?

Think of ways to discourage thieves from the street - they are lazy and often , just the appearance of your home from the street as they drive by will make them choose someplace else. fake TV in a window. There's a device called that, at night it looks just like a TV is on. Dog yard signs - even bet...

Can joist hangers be attached directly to the side of a slab foundation? No ledger board?

Re: Double Gate - Initial Thoughts

from what I've read, you want 'about' 1/3 of a post to be in the ground. With a gate swinging off of it, probably more, so, 4 ft may be about right. Dunno about tubes....many times I HAVE read that you should use a shovel to undercut the sides of the holes towards the bottom if possible - so the con...

Re: Outdoor wood stain for fence

Maybe contact Varathane/Rust-Oleum? They have SO many products, there may be a compatible sealer that could be put over it - something UV and water resistant. I don't think it can be used over another product, but I am having a new cedar fence installed. For part of it, the top surface of the horizo...

Re: Wimpy vinyl faux shutters

If I remove them, I'd be likely to find some other fastening system than the plastic spikes - as I was installing them, I found a coupla areas where bricks were loose - I really would rather not 'disturb' the wall any more with heavy-duty masonry anchors. There 'may' be some other contact areas but,...

Wimpy vinyl faux shutters

I replaced some rotten decorative wooden shutters on our recently purchased 1960s home with some white vinyl shutters. The shutters seem overpriced to me, but they look OK from a distance. The attachment is iffy - some barbed plastic spics driven into some 1/4" holse I drilled into the old mortar. O...
