Re: Garage Door -> Framed Wall with Door

Here's another follow up to this post. We've mostly finished the front. Ended up making a sliding barn door instead of going with a segmented door for the other half of the garage. Besides looking nicer, it provides more room for the opening and takes up no room inside the garage itself. Plus it mak...

Re: Roof Safety Bracket + Trimming Singles

Thanks for the tips! I'll order a hook blade attachment for my oscillating saw. It looks like a fast job with that. As for the safety harness, I had not considered leaving the bracket up but it's an interesting idea. The roof is 7/12 which I know isn't *that* steep but it was very helpful having the...

Roof Safety Bracket + Trimming Singles

Hey everyone. Two roofing question: 1. When working with a safety harness, what's the best procedure for placing and removing the loop that goes on the ridge? I don't want to bolt it to an area of new shingling as it would presumably create many holes but it has to go somewhere. 2. What's the best w...

Garage Door Clearances

Anyone know the minimum clearance for hardware beyond the rough open for a garage door? (Both top and sides.) I'd like as large of a garage door as possible but there isn't much clearance on the inside. Also, thoughts on the old style one-piece garage doors? It would solve my clearance problem and I...

Ideas for a raised deck retrofit and pergola

Hello helpful House-Improvements- I have a raised ~10x20' deck supported by five 4x4 posts. Strangely, there's also three support posts on the house side although it appears to be connected to the house correctly so I don't know why these were added. I'd like to reduce the number support posts on th...

Old window jamb retrofit recommendations

I'm looking for recommendations on products used to replaced the rope & pulley system in old wood windows. (<1940s.) I've seen nice aluminum & vinyl jamb liners which make the old window look to be as airtight as a new window but I'm having trouble finding a source for such things. Advice on install...

Re: Garage Door -> Framed Wall with Door

Here is a work in progress picture for those wondering. Nothing has been painted yet and the siding needs caulking. I need to think of something nice to do with the exposed sheathing on the bottom. Definitely a learning experience and it's been hard because with the short days most of the work happe...

Re: Garage Door -> Framed Wall with Door

Another question: There's a slight slope down towards the driveway. What's the best solution for the framing? Could I install a bottom still and then shim the bottom plate so that it's level in at least on direction? (Or rip a 6x6 on angle to compensate.)

Thanks.

Re: Garage Door -> Framed Wall with Door

Thanks for the quick suggestion -- great idea about tacking, measuring, and pre-building. It looks like there are some moderately inexpensive steel residential doors at the local big box store so that's my choice. I see there are pre-made rubber wheelchair ramps for door thresholds which will solve ...

Garage Door -> Framed Wall with Door

First off, thank you so much Shannon for the excellent videos and tips. I'm sure you've helped tens of thousands of people like me with your teaching. I have a double garage with small (approx 8ft square) bays. I'd like to replace one of the garage doors (right side) with a framed wall featuring an ...
