Re: Three Way Light Switch Not Working

Okay, so which wire in each box is the hot wire? You can determine this by using the ground as the neutral with your tester.

Yeah I think you already have insulated door panels. Mine look just like yours on the inside, and I know for sure mine are insulated.

Re: Three Way Light Switch Not Working

I swapped the circled wires and it didn't seem to help. If the light was on I could turn it off and on from either switch, but if off I could only turn it on from the one that had turned it off. Have you been able to identify the presence of power in Box A? If not, I think that is your problem, bec...

Re: Over Spray paint in a ceiling box: Concern or not?

No worries about the paint on the wires in the box. The ground wire is the only wire where you may need to use a little sandpaper to scrape off the paint so you have good shiny copper to splice with the ground of the fixture. The other two wires are hot and neutral and are black and white respective...

I'd send in a sample of your water for analysis. Contact your county extension office:

Also, maybe ask your neighbors -- do they have the same odor in their water? Maybe there's an issue with your water supply?

Re: Furnace

The big trend right now seems to be the ductless mini-split systems for heating and cooling homes. I think they operate similarly to heat pumps. Tankless water heaters are great if you take short showers, use a dishwasher, and intermittently use a clothes washer. Basically acute and "bursty" needs f...

Ha, that kid could very well have been me at 6 years old. I remember helping my Dad with renos and gutting at a young age.

Though I'd have been high on sugar at the time, likely.

Re: Underlayment in kitchen

If your cabs are over the underlayment, I wouldn't bother removing it. If it's clean and flat, I'd just put the laminate over it. You will have some height difference compared to the rest of the rooms in the house, which can be mitigated somewhat with a proper threshold at the transitions of underla...

Re: AFCI Breakers vs. AFCI Receptacles

Use the breaker, if possible. If you use the receptacle, then you need to use metal-clad or metal conduit to that first receptacle from the panel so that first run of cable is protected. So you may as well just use the AFCI breaker from the source. No issues with tandem breakers, they're every bit a...

Reading the pic you posted above, I guess it is suited for burial. But I wouldn't use it because it's unnecessarily expensive when you can just direct-bury 14/2 (Type UF-B or NMWU).

Re: Outdoor and Underground Conduit

No you definitely need to use straight 10-foot sections of PVC tubing for burial. It has some bend to it so it should conform to the profile of the land. You can use those turn fittings as needed. But that flex stuff you posted above is not suited for burial. But to power a lampost? You can bury 14/...

Ok, don't need to get a pic of that right now because I think we can work with Box A at the moment. Go ahead and very carefully unscrew the yellow wirenut from the two white wires (don't take them apart, just expose the copper). Can you use your voltage tester to see if you get 120V between that neu...

Re: Three Way Light Switch Not Working

If I had to guess the power originates in the box with the splice (yellow wirenut), in your first and second pic. Call it box A. It cannot originate at the 3-way switch with just the one cable coming into the box and all its wires connecting to the switch. Call this Box B. Can you take a pic of Box ...

I grew up with a 15" color TV in the living room, and that TV was later replaced with a 13" Sony. In the kitchen nook where we had breakfast was like a 10" B&W tv. To think color TVs were north if $500 in the 1980s and 90s, and that was like for a 20-30", and damn near took two people to lift it. No...

Re: How Should I Reroute Electrical?

No, you can splice old and new cable. Yes, just connect all grounds together (if more than one cable with ground enters the box) and make sure the metal box is also bonded with a ground pigtail.

If using a plastic box then just connect all the grounds and there is no requirement for a box pigtail.

I have limestone foundation in my 1890 house here in Minnesota. I don't think ANYTHING can be done with it. It just needs to breathe, shed its efflorescence, and just be left alone. I have to "sweep the walls" with a broom and all this sand and grit just falls to the floor. It's annoying but I dare ...
