Re: The Official Useless Post Thread

I miss toys made with actual metal. They were already on their way out when I was a kid (I'm 40) and most stuff was plastic but the really good stuff was still metal at that point. They just don't make 'em like they used to that's for sure. Speaking of plastic junk, anyone remember big wheels growin...

Re: Holes in drywall mud

Yup just force it into the holes , no need to cover the entire surface with a coat again. I find mudding over painted surfaces you get these bubbles more often. Ya mudding over painted walls is almost always the cause of this problem. I've heard it's because the 'backside' of the mud (against the p...

Re: Safety

I have to admit in all honesty when you are framing (residentially especially) IMO there is no real safe place to tie off in that case and if you did , it would be a tripping hazard as well. And the addition of that air hose is even worse in combination to a lanyard line. This x1,000,000. We get in ...

Re: The Official Useless Post Thread

I still don't know why Nutzy keeps coming over to help you. Poor guy has the worst luck every time he shows up at your place. I don't know why either ! He feeds us the 'cheap' beer ... lots of it ... then puts us to work and films the ensuing mayhem  Ok, well it's the free beer that keeps ...

Re: Arcade Cabinet Build

That is really cool. Nice job. Of all the random junk that passes through my head daily, I can honestly say building an arcade style machine with a Pi never made it through. :) Thanks. When you finish your bathroom you should build an arcade machine. Us guys need a 'just for me, not her' project to...

Re: Arcade Cabinet Build

Oh I'm definitely still doing the logo. Just figuring out what else I need to get printed professionally and then doing it all in one shot. Maybe you'll see some Pacman. I just keep using Double Dragon since the screen is mostly black. A bright screen messes with my phone camera and makes it either ...

In my head, I'm still 18 ... just high mileage

I think we all feel the same, young at heart?

Depends on the day, sometimes at the end of the workday I feel old and sore lol.

Re: Arcade Cabinet Build

Well I got a little more out of the way. I added some LED striplights to give it a blue glow behind and above the cabinet, and below the control panel. I used a second set of LEDs to make the marquee lights. Best part of that was finding a reason to buy a good soldering iron and learn how to solder ...

Ok, sounds good. I toned down things so they're a little subdued to blend into the background and make the text stand out more. Thanks!

And Nutzy of course I have pong on there, not that I'm gonna play it but it's less than 10kb. Might as well in case someone gets the urge.

Re: Arcade Cabinet Build

Well I mostly designed the marquee for the top of the cabinet. Do you think it's too 'busy' visually with all the circuit looking stuff? I'm kinda stuck on whether or not I should get rid of all the red sub-circuits and just keep the main blue ones. Going for kind of a Tron-ish vibe with it https://...

Re: Drywall basement ceiling directly to floor joists or ...

I always strap joists/trusses for drywall for a few reasons. It allows you to straighten things out better since joists/trusses are never perfectly flat. You can use shims between the joists and strapping to fix up any wavy spots, then just nail through the shims once it looks good. It makes life ea...

Well I just used regular latex paint and it seems to have gone fine, no swelling or excess moisture anywhere. Re: Arcade Cabinet Build

For most of the cabinet I'm just priming and painting with semi-gloss. For the Marquee I'm going to get something printed out (not sure what material yet but probably vinyl) and sandwich it between two pieces of acrylic and have a 5V led strip backlight. The side panels are going to have graphics th...

Re: Arcade Cabinet Build

Pretty much that. I used a piece of 2" ABS to trace each radius and then cut them as close to exact as possible with the jig saw. I used a palm sander (the square type, not orbital) + 220 grit paper to smooth out the surface. They aren't 100% perfect but it's close enough that the eye can't tell. Th...

Ya, not to mention all the fun conversations at break like "Do you remember the time when so and so did blah blah blah". That's probably 1/3rd of our break time talks. Re: The Official Useless Post Thread

Ya sometimes work ain't so bad when you get to do stupid stuff. I like to save up all the bent discarded nails in a box, then when someone isn't looking I'll fill their pockets up with them and put a layer of good nails on top. One time I saved up a whole box and put it in the trailer and made it lo...

Thanks! It fits a 24" monitor which is more than enough, old school arcade monitors were smaller than that and they always looked pretty big to me since you're standing so close to it. And ya I just got a used 16:9 monitor to mount up. Good CRT's that would take RGB input (Ain't no way I'd use compo...

LOL, we have similar ways we mess with new guys just carpentry oriented. "Go back to the truck and get the wood stretcher" / "...Round squar...

Re: Arcade Cabinet Build

That's basically what I've done for a long time (PC + Emulators). Your Xbox 360 controllers will work with Windows since both are Microsoft products. IIRC Wired ones you can plug right in since they're USB, wireless ones you need a receiver for the PC that you can pair the controllers with. In each ...

Re: Misplaced support posts

The header wouldn't need to be 16ft long. What you would need to have done is have each header sit in the corner of the wall (the top of the header flush with the top of the wall). Usually what I would do is put 1 regular stud + 3 jack studs at that corner to support the load from the header. The ja...
