Re: Correct way to ground receptacles

It would. I'd feel a little squeamish about running the conductor itself behind the walls, as it's really rated and designed for operating within conduit. But the wire I am thinking to use is https://www.amazon.com/WRGND100-Copper-Ground-Wire-Gauge/dp/B008OILG5I/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid...

Re: Correct way to ground receptacles

Thanks Aaron! What type of electrical cabling is preexisting in the house? Is it old 2-wire NM cable (non-grounded), or is it flexible metallic conduit (also known as "greenfield")? It looks like tightly coiled steel hose, usually about 3/4" in outside diameter. Very common in 1960s construction. It...

Re: Correct way to ground receptacles

Thanks @emtnut. Yeah, I am looking for US rules. Yes you can. It's rarely done thou, because if you do the work to run the wire, an electrician would just install new cable. Yeah, I guess re-wiring is an option but that would require to replace the cable which might be running within the wall horizo...

Correct way to ground receptacles

Hi Guys, So in old houses from 60s which are not grounded, after upgrading the electrical panel to have a grounding bar, what is the correct way per code to ground the receptacles? 1. Can one just run a ground wire (something like this: https://www.amazon.com/WRGND100-Copper-Ground-Wire-Gauge/dp/B00...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Thanks Shannon and Spruce. So looks like you would suggest to just cut to length and friction fit the rockwool batts without worrying about condensation or moisture issues as they won't happen in the climate of my area? So I guess even in new construction in my area, contractors probably don't use v...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Thanks Spruce! I am fine in installing the insulation (Rockwool). In fact, I think and hope that it will reduce the drum sound effect further but what I am worried about is the post-installation issues such as vapor forming/moisture etc. on the underside of the subfloor etc. Should I be concerned ab...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Thanks Shannon! Hmm. I think I am going to use the hand stapler and twine as I think I would be able to re-use the stapler in future in case needed for some other purpose. BTW, I am getting confused now on installing the insulation in the first place itself, though I have already bought it but guess...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Also any experience about these wires: https://www.lowes.com/pd/100-Pack-Insul ... in/1007637 ? I am thinking to get these as they seem to be easier to install instead of rope solution. Like I said it would be $16-17 per 100 pieces and I would need like 300 so would be expensive then simple using t...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Thanks Shannon! I am planing to screw the subfloor into these blocking from above, so they are not just for holding the insulation. Is screwing down the subfloor onto these blockings not OK? Yeah, I am placing them 24" OC so the expected (+/- my skills) space b/w two blockings side surfaces is 22.5 ...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

While I continue to work on installing the blockings, I am almost always cutting the blockings wrong size, either 1-2mm short or 1-2mm longer. So the majority of my blockings are not accurate size and I am just using the screws (no hangers). So there are some blockings where I could even see the scr...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Hmm... I guess I am gonna go back to 2x6 as I haven't got anything installed yet and it would be disappointment if 2x4 doesn't make the floor as solid as I would like after so much of work. Quick question - do you think https://www.homedepot.com/p/2-in-x-6-in-x-8-ft-2-and-Better-Prime-Douglas-Fir-Lu...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Thanks Spruce. I didn't realize until I started installing 2x6 blockings that blocking height which is 5.5 inches is more than joist/beam's height which is 5.25. So the blocking was coming down slightly more than joist (i.e. joist's bottom edge was not aligning with blocking's bottom edge) and also ...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

yes, 5 screws per end of each block.
Would 3 per side be OK? One from bottom edge, one from left side and one from right side? Driving 5 is getting harder. :-( Or with 3, I would be making the connection weak?

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

I got the cats paw and tried it. These nails in the subfloor seem to be nailed so hard that I am failing to pull them. Their head breaks but they are not willing to come out. I guess I am going to give up and just go slowly and do it through single crawlspace opening I have, unless you guys have any...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Other than cutting more conveniently located access points, there is no need to remove the entire floor. While cumbersome, working from underneath isn't all that bad, and with the subfloor in place you can push the blocking up tightly to the subfloor before nailing, to ensure a tight fit. Quick tip...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

OK, did little bit of work and materials purchase today. Man, it is hard to work down there. After taking some measurements in crawlspace, decided to remove the carpet to see the subfloor better. Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

You know what I think that safe and sound is only available in 3" and if I'm correct I think they say it is only minimally better doubled up so maybe switch to 2x4 s and use one layer?? Yeah, I was also thinking that in that case maybe just use 2x4 but I am just thinking just in case I needed to do...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Oh yeah, and another question I have is - when I buy 2x6 lumbers, should I acclimate them to the atmosphere in crawlspace before I cut them in 4 ft pieces, or can I just cut and install right away? If I should acclimate them then for how long?

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

The insulation will be R-20 to R22 depending on the product you choose I would suggest that you use Roxul safe and sound (Rockwool safe and sound they call it now) it actually does not list an R value on the safe and sound type so just get the one listed for 2x6 cavities. Makes sense. I found this ...

Thanks Shannon & Spruce! Creating a web type structure to hold insulation sounds good too. Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Seems like with that construction you are getting kinda a drum effect when walking on it? Maybe the Roxul would help, you may have to add some frame work in there to get things to fit? Yeah, it is that drum effect when I walk. With heavy foot steps I feel as if I am beating the drum. Like Spruce sa...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

I tried to make a video, hope it captures the sound. You can hear that boom-boom sound if you keep the speaker closer to the ear. In the video, I am stumping on the floor. It sounds more like a cabin in woods, maybe that is a better description. Actually even walls shake when I do that. My second pi...

Though I am confused, it looks like the subfloor's thickness is more than an inch, it rather measured around 1 and 1/...

Re: Prep the room for paint

Thanks Spruce! The texture you have looks to be skip trowel that has years of paint build up on it, the paint being rolled on has added it's own texture, it's going to be tough to match, but not impossible. If you want smooth walls or to retexture, I'd float the walls with a layer of topping compoun...
