Prep the room for paint

Hi, I am in the phase of prep'ing the room for paint. Need some advice there. There are some cracks on the walls, not a lot but 3-4 cracks at different locations in whole house. The walls have a textured paint (see picture attached). So before I start painting, want to fix up those cracks. Drywall c...

Re: Need help to plan out renovation steps

Thanks Spruce. That makes a lot of sense. I want to buy only those tools which are useful now and in future, so I guess I will just go for reciprocating saw which seems more useful in general to me. Another question I have is on demolition tools. Should I buy crowbar or prybar? How long and which br...

Re: Need help to plan out renovation steps

Thanks Spruce! So should I buy reciprocating saw or oscillating saw or both? I think oscillating saw could be useful for cutting the piece of wood from door frame while installing the flooring, not sure if reciprocating saw could fulfill that purpose too. Also, do you think installing recessed light...

Re: Need help to plan out renovation steps

And yeah, for opening up the drywall and cutting baseboard, doors, trims, making hole for recessed light in ceiling etc. what type of tools (basically saws) should I buy? I saw something called Circular saw, but it looks like that will good only for cutting baseboards, trims and doors. Is that right...

Re: Need help to plan out renovation steps

Thanks Shannon and Spruce. I will look for that. Shannon, in one of your videos where you did the hardwood floor, you used a screw gun kind of thing. In fact, you used it in another video where you did the baseboard installation. Is there a replacement for that tool or should I buy that as well as I...

Re: Need help to plan out renovation steps

I am now considering to do recessed lights installation myself. Is that a doable task? Also, I am planning to buy a drill-driver as my 1st tool which I think would be very important and handy all the time for all the tasks I have listed in my message in this post. Could you please suggest some good ...

Re: Need help to plan out renovation steps

Thanks much for the detailed answers, Spruce. Much appreciated. I guess I understand it better now. :) Buying items together makes sense considering delivery costs, we have lot of storage so storing excess material is not an issue. Will shoot for getting all at once. Would you have any recommendatio...

Re: Need help to plan out renovation steps

Thanks Spruce and Shannon. I am sure I will have lot more questions when I start the work, but looks like items I listed as DIY are possible by myself. :) We will be living in the home so I guess I will be going room by room. Would you recommend buying material (e.g. windows, doors, paint, flooring ...

Need help to plan out renovation steps

Hi, I am planning a full home renovation and need advice and help to plan out and identify items which I should be able to deal with myself vs. a licensed contractor. This is 1960s house with pretty everything original. It is 4 bed, 2 bath with a living room and a family room. Here are the things I ...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Oh yeah, I am ok with cracking noise, actually there is not much in my floor. I am more concerned about that woofery noise which comes when thumping my foot on floor. Hope that should reduce after adding Roxul safe. For adding it to the wall, would I be able to reuse the drywall or I will have to th...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Thanks Shannon. Btw just thinking if I add Roxul safe and sound in between floor joists just like in wall that should help in sound issue from the floor when I walk on it?

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Thanks for all the replies Spruce and Shannon. Spruce, what is the process to stiffen up the joists and by adding support to subfloor did you mean to add another layer on subfloor? I actually have another sound related question. Basically, could you also suggest me how to soundproof the bathroom wal...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Yeah, currently the room is empty. I wonder if emptiness is adding to the issue. Though kitchen is not empty but still has the same issue. Another data point is that I don't hear such noise when I walk in the hallway. So it seems to be happening only in places where floor area b/w walls is large. I ...

Re: How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Thanks Shannon and Spruce for quick responses. Could the underlayment help with the hardwood floor? Like some kind of sound absorbing layment?

How to fix sound issue when walking on the floor

Hi Guys, My name is Arvind and this is my first post here. It seems that I have some sort of sound issue with the floor in my home. When I walk in the living room with light footsteps, it all feels normal but if I put heavy foot steps, I get probably some hollow sound. It rather feels like I am walk...
