Reno bathroom

Post by InOverMyHead » Tue Feb 26, 2019 8:42 pm

Started gutting the bathroom and discovered whoever built my home 20 years ago had zero pride. I’m the second owner of this home, and the previous owner did not do any upgrades, all original when I moved in.
So the problem I have and hoping for some advice is the shower drain pipe.
When I removed the wall tub shower I discovered a huge hole. “measure twice, cut once” was not part of the builders mentality. Anyways long story short....the drain pipe is 4” from where I need it to be. I’d like to drill a hole in the joist and run the pipe through to the other side. As you can see in the pictures, I don’t think I can do this joist anymore damage than it’s alreasy received.
I’m installing a shower and the base puts the hole on the other side. Any suggestions?

You are right to be concerned, for all intents and purposes, that joist is non-existent due to the hacking it has received. How far in either direction do you have to go before there is support from below? I would consider sistering this joist from support point to support point, then you can move your drain and, if necessary, carve a little more on it, the new joist will carry the weight/span that the original and severely hacked joist can't.
If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Do you have to drill through it? Is the pipe low enough at some point that you could pass under the hoist and up the other side?

The pipe has no room to go under the joist. Strapping then drywall for the basement ceiling. I will be opening up the floor to have a better look and I’ll share my findings.

going to be tough to double up that joist properly without opening the ceiling below.
What room is below the bathroom?
