Can we frame safely for a shower seat?

Post by 6ftdoll » Tue Jul 02, 2019 4:45 pm

Hello again, I have another question re: framing. We're slowly ordering a few supplies on Amazon for our bathroom remodel (using Shannon's link of course ;) ) and I really would like a folding teak shower bench and 2 prefab niches.

Problem is, the bench and niches need to be attached to studs 16" centered. I want to move one stud an inch to the right which will accomodate the niches but I still need something to attach the bench to.

Can I notch out 3 studs, add a horizontal 2x4 and some cripple studs for extra support then have my bench attached to that?
Pls forgive me and move if I should post this in the bathroom forum. Thank you!

Yes, you can move the stud an inch to the right, however, you will disturb the drywall fasteners on the other side of the wall that will need to be repaired. Not a big deal, but noteworthy to pay attention to.

As for the bench, you should be able to simply add blocking between the studs. You could notch in a 2x4 as you mentioned, but I think blocking will be ultimately faster and easier. Cut a 2x the width of the stud bay, then toe nail it on each end into the studs.
If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Phew...thats a relief. Been stressing over this the past few days.
The adjacent wall is actually my clothing closet, so patching temporily will do. Thanks again for this!!
