A dusty, monotonous task indeed. I think the method I've mostly seen people use is a long iron rod with a chisel at the end of it and they scrape it up while standing and using their body weight to scrape it in a long sweeping motions. You get more torque that way. But you could also perhaps run the risk of getting a bad angle and damaging your subfloor, if it's plywood or OSB.
