Basement wall framing around septic drain line

Post by bfield3 » Thu Jan 25, 2018 8:32 pm

Hello - new member here. Just found this great site via youtube.

I have a good sized basement that has absolutely no finish work at all in the basement. Just bare walls and a whole lot of junk stored down there. I've decided I want to finish off some of it. The part I want to finish has a septic drain line running along two of the walls. On one of the walls the line goes through the basement wall into the septic tank. There is a cleanout at that point which sticks out quite a ways. I plan to attach insulation board to the walls and then stud frame in front of that. But I don't know how to handle insulating and framing around the drain lines. Would I run the insulation board as close as possible to the drain lines and cleanout and then frame the wall out 8" or so from the basement wall so there is clearance for the drain? Do I frame up tight and build a bulk head around drain lines? I know I'll need to have access points where the cleanouts are in case I ever need to get in there.

This question has probably been asked before and I apologize if it has. But the search function for the forum doesn't seem to be working for me.

Thanks in advance.

If you can get the foam behind the pipes as well that would be great otherwise get it close and then seal with sprayfoam in behind. Frame your wall out infront of the line and I would lay batts of R21 between the framing and the foam in the void and then insulate the wall with R12 as well. You will have a very cozy basement . As for around the clean up you will have to be creative to hide that but still have it accessible .

Thanks Shannon. I've decided I'm going to take the time to move the drain line out a ways from the wall so I can get the foam panels behind it. I'll have to cut a couple pipes and reconnect, but nothing worth doing is ever easy so they say :-)

I did install 2" Thick foam board around 3" PVC drain pipe. Then in front of pipe did 2x4 stud wall. Then fill with the ROXUL. I have to double the Roxul(R15-3.5" Thick) in those cavities where the pipe runs. Please see attached picture. By the way, i took advise from Shannon before I started to finish my walls. I am located in NorthEast USA.

Hi Shannon,
Sorry for the late reply. I found the anchors from USA homedepot online page. Please see attahced link. In case if you're not able to open the link I am also attaching.pdf made fropm the homedepot.com page. It is "Plast-Grip" Brand.
$117.30 USD for 250 pcs.
3-1/2 in. length
2-3/8 in. Dia. head
Simply pre-drill a 5/16 in. diameter hole through the insulation into the concrete/CMU, insert anchor and tap flush with a hammer. This anchor provides a fast and efficient way of mechanically attaching insulation.
