Drywall Mudding Confined Area

Post by MindBender » Sun Feb 10, 2019 9:29 pm

I have a bunch of drywall niches 13" x 13" x 3" deep to finish. It was okay to put on a tape, but I'm having hard time applying finish coat because I can't lay knife flat to finish a nice smooth coat (hits sides).

Any tips on best approach to lay down smooth finish coat in such a confined area?

Purchase a plastic drywall knife and cut off the handle. This will help .

Doing small spaces like that will be tough, expect to do a lot of sanding to get them smooth and flawless.

As Shannon said, you can cut the handle off of a plastic knife or buy a cheap metal one and bend the knife at the handle tang to about 45*, this will give you something to hold onto while still getting the knife at a decent angle for spreading and smoothing.

Added help will come from thinning and creaming the compound to an easily workable consistency.
