Is underlayment needed?

Post by jetsmell » Sun Mar 10, 2019 10:38 pm

I have an original hardwood floor which is in good shape, flat, no squeaks. Sanding would be a real mess, so I would like to install laminate floating flooring over it. Is underlayment needed?

Kind of hard to answer. You definitely want some sort of buffer between old floor and new, just to inhibit any squeaks or chatter from the original floor. In my experience, there is an 1/8" foam pad that is laid over whatever is existing to create this buffer.

What does your flooring manufacturer recommend?
