- Find the center line of the joists and mark them.
- Measure the width of the hole you want and draw parallel lines between the joist lines.
- Cut - set saw just below the depth of the subfloor. Over cutting the corners will be necessary to cut the corners all the way through, the center line of the saw blade will be your guide.
- Install 2x4 blocking between the joists so that the centerline is split between the hole and the patch piece, just like how the joist cuts were done. The blocks should be a snug fit, enough that they have to be tapped into place with a hammer
- Toe nail both ends of each block with 2 #10 deck screws.
- Reinstall your patch piece with screws.
Note: The subfloor may be glued to the joists, if this is the case, then you will likely destroy the piece when you remove it and have to buy a new piece to replace it. Watch out for wires and pipes when installing screws!!!!! Make sure your screws are placed away from these items.
