Post to floor or beam?

Post by hankyknot » Thu Oct 17, 2019 5:05 pm

We have a support beam in the basement that holds the floor joists for the first floor. We need to replace a smaller post that was on the original first floor supporting a smaller beam that in turn supported the trusses. When we replace this post, should we take it all the way down the basement beam and floor around it or just take it down to the first floor subfloor?

It really depends on the load and design . I may be able to help with more info. Is this a one storey home? What is the length of the beam on the main floor.? Is it only supporting basic trusses? If the new post was extended to the basement beam how close would that post be to one under the basement beam?

Ok so it's a single storey home, the beam supporting the trusses is 16ft and the first floor post would be directly above the basement post. The roof section over this part of the building is hipped although the trusses are basic triangles with collar ties at the top.

So yes I would say that this main floor post should either go right to the beam /post below or at least there should be solid blocking between the under side of the plywood to the top of the basement beam.
