Attaching drywall to metal soffit

Post by csankar69 » Mon Nov 04, 2019 5:25 pm

When building a ceiling soffit for a basement project can drywall be attached to the underside of the track? The soffit ladder is going to have a track attached to the ceiling joist, a track in the bottom (to clear the ducts) and the studs as rails in-between. With this setup the ceiling drywall will need to be screwed onto the bottom track. Is this okay or is it not a good idea to attach drywall to the track? All tracks and studs are 20 gauge.

Thanks Shannon. Someone told me that tracks are not meant for that purpose and that I should design such that drywall only attaches to the side of a stud.

You will be fine, I build bulkheads like that under ducts often.
