Wide soffit

Post by kbucky » Sun Dec 29, 2019 9:46 pm

I am building a soffit to cover up up ductwork in the basement. I need to span about a 75" width.

Do I need to worry about the 2x4s under the ductwork sagging with that wide of a width?

I used 2x2s for the top and bottom of the ladders with 2x4s 16" OC.

That is pretty wide but you should be fine, maybe after a few years you may get a slight sag but likely un detectable. If you can get a vertical support around mid span at all in a few spots that would help.

Thanks for the help. I likely could fit a 2x2 ladder in the middle of the soffit between ducts and attach that to the middle of all the 2x4s.

that would be better if you can do it. Even just a 2x2 every so often, does not need to be a complete ladder system
