Garage soffit and j channel

Post by lynnb » Tue Oct 27, 2015 8:12 pm

Hi Shannon
I started working on my garage to do the soffit and fascia. I followed your video for when I did my shed and went great.
Wanted to know how do I deal with the front of my garage , as you can see in the photos there is brick sticking out which is stopping j channel to pass as well I can't make a 90 degree j channel up the corners because of the wood as the soffit. What would be proper way to go abouts this. I'd like to do soffit and fascia on all of the garage.

The brick does cause some issues here. First cut your existing J off so it butts to the back of the brick . Then cut a small piece of J just as wide as the brick ,use wood to shim it down from the existing wood soffit and install it to that wood. Now remove the slanted wood fascia on the back side of the boxed end and recut and install it plumb. Cut the angled wood fascia plumb as well and flush to the plumb back side pice you re installed. The level soffit under the eave will be installed as usual but when you get out into the boxed end area shim it down with wood to be level and then use fascia to cover the new plumb backside that used to be slanted. It may take a couple of pieces to cover that. You can use one on the bottom with the lip and then cut the lip off another piece and place it over top of the first one and slide it to the top . I have attached a similar picture of one , the only difference is my picture has soffit running up the back side because the re were no bricks preventing the J from running straight out. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks Shannon, been busy and couldn't get back to you. Working on garage length of soffit right now, as you know time went back so days are not allowing the garage to get worked on when I work my 12 hour shift , that and the darn fall rain. Will keep you posted as I get to the end troubled area.
