Shed trusses

Post by beeg » Tue Jun 19, 2018 3:47 pm

Watching the videos on measuring and building shed roof trusses.
Question: will that procedure work for a 16' span? Or will it require
additional or different steps?

BTW, I'm new to this forum thing so I hope I did this right.

Thanks,
B

For 16' ones, you might consider prefab, that's my two cents!

Thanks. These are for a chicken run so hoping I can do it myself but it has occurred that I may have to do the prefab thing. Dang! These birds are getting expensive!

I wouldn't bother with trusses, they get too expensive to buy for such a thing.

I would run a ridge beam, then place rafters in from there. You will probably want a few collar ties to keep the walls from bowing out under the weight of the roof. Collar ties are a 2x that run from one top plate across the space to the top plate on the other side, securing the two walls together.

This sounds more like what I need to be doing. Thank you!

That would be great! I saw his video on building a 6 x 8 shed; he did a good job of explaining the trusses he built and that's what I was planning to use as my model to put up rafters. I even understood the math! But then I'd better; I taught other people's children for almost 30 years.

I'm glad you found your way here after I redirected you from the Email contact.

I would build them yourself if it was me. You will need collar ties joining the two sides of the rafter to help give it support for the longer span. Basically cut an extra 2x4 that is about half as long as the rafter and then install them in a horizontal position against each rafter pair.

If you watched the shed wrap up video you will remember I forgot to do any collar ties in the roof video but did show them in the wrap up video. My shed was small and I used basically OSB gussets up higher to help tie the rafter halves together. For your span the collar ties are actually preventing the roof weight or anything added to it from pushing the exterior walls outward.

Thanks so much, Shannon! I think I'm ready to give this a shot now.
