Installing new siding

Post by rjmcfee82 » Fri Sep 13, 2019 3:44 pm

Hi, I'm wanting to install new siding. The problem being we have large over hangs on the front and back of our home. The siding I'm wanting to add is to the end of the house. My outside corner meets the underside of the soffits. The soffits are approximately 16" deep. How would I address the area where the corner trim would meet the siding for the upper portion of the wall? Big question I've had for years. Need to replace siding very soon.

Post a pic or two of the problem area.

As you can see in the picture, the corner comes up to the soffit. What is the best way to run the siding and corner trim?

What are you using for siding and trim? T1-11, vinyl, masonite lap, cement lap, wood lap?

Vinyl

If I understand correctly, your talking about the gable, so where the corner post ends at the top, you should have j channel installed along the edges of the gable. But maybe Shannon understands more better.

Yes. I not sure if I would need to put j-channel there or maybe a starter strip. I just don't want water and ice getting in behind it.

Yes J is what you want there.Either a short piece just across the top of the corner or if you are siding the end of the overhang (that's what I would do) then that J will go all the way along the bottom edge of the over hang and across the top of the corner.

So will I run the corner post up to the bottom of the right angle. Then bring then j channel over top of it? Will this keep the ice and water from getting in behind the siding?

Yes that is correct. Make sure you finish the house wrap first. Vinyl siding is not completely water tight by no stretch of the imagination so it will never be completely sealed.
If you are doing aluminum soffit and fascia do that first ,and I would use fascia on that end part of the gable for the over hang, then the J for the siding will get attached right over that fascia. This gives you nice finished look from below.

Last question. Do I need to notch the j channel to create a flap that hangs down inside the corner trim?

So the part that I have circled, the over hang. Use aluminum facia there. Is that what you're saying?

Are you doing aluminum soffit and fascia?

How much do the singles hang out past the wall sheathing?

I plan on doing vinyl soffit and aluminum facia.

The shingles only overhang by about 2 inches. It just as a standard drip cap on the end.

So install the vinyl soffit then wrap the end of the eave (area you kinda had circled) with the aluminum fascia to finish the end and bottom of the soffit nicely then install the J flush along the bottom corner of the fascia. this will stretch from the outer end of the eave/gable out to the RH edge of the corner. The fascia piece ends up basically all covered but leaves you a nice finished closed in bottom corner of the soffit .

So is the drip cap tight to the plywood on the gable end? If it is this is going to cause you some issues. About all you can do is run J up against the bottom edge of the drip and then side up into it.
If there is room to get under it that would be better
If there is room to add a 2x6 wood fascia up under it that would be best IMO. You an then install aluminum fascia over it and run siding J under the bottom side of the fascia piece to finish the gable nice and neatly.
