Welder

Post by Newfie » Sun Jul 28, 2013 12:56 am

I am installing a 50 amp receptacle for a welder in my garage. I am using 8/3 wire 1-black, 1 ground, 1-red, 1-white.

How do I connect the wires to the receptacle?

I believe I can figure out, how to connect the breaker in the main box.

You actually only needed 8/2 wire but you can do it with what you have if it is already installed and not returnable. As well if you are going over 80 or so feet then I would go to a 6/2.

With what you have the white wire will not be used and can be taped off at both ends . Attach your black and red wires to the screws on the plug that corresponds to the flat blades of the plug. Attach the ground to the round shaped position. So at the panel the black and reds will attach to the breaker and the ground to the ground bar.
