Electrical wire crossing cold air return duct

Hi... I am running wire for electrical outlets (finishing basement) in walls and have two cold air return duct in walls (between 2 studs) ... can I pass electrical wire through these cold air return as per ontario electrical code? Thanks in advance for help :)

Yes, you can pass perpendicular through the cold air duct (as you did)

You cannot run parallel (lengthwise) in the duct (ie using the duct as a conduit)

I would recommend you seal up the holes after all the wires are run. Caulking or spray foam would be fine.

You may have to use a fire-barrier type of sealer too, I think that's code in most places. It comes in expanding foam, caulk, and putty.

I do not think in Canada it is But you are likely correct for the US. You guys are way more sticky on residential fire blocking. In any event it will not hurt anything to be on the safe side.

Yeah I know, it's because you're in a colder climate and fire is not as hot up there, remember? :lol:
