Breaker size for outdoor socket - Ontario Code

Post by broddo » Sun Nov 25, 2018 1:15 pm

Hey Shannon,

Quick one for you. I'm installing a new weather proofed outdoor socket as a direct run from my breaker. I can't seem to find any information whatsoever about the rules surrounding the breaker size in the Ontario code (i.e. 15amp vs 20amp) for an outdoor socket.

Can I have a 20amp circuit or am I stuck with 15amp? 20amp would obviously be preferable for heavier duty power tools. (I can run 12/2 cable if 20 amp is allowable).

What do you think?
Cheers!

20amp should be no problem. Be sure you use 12/2 wire and a 20amp gfci recepticle.

Also, outdoor receptacles now require in-use covers so that plugged-in cords are protected:

You can find kits where you get an outdoor box, weather-resistant GFCI receptacle, and in-use cover all in one package. You probably save about 20% or so versus buying all that stuff a la carte. But unfortunately I'm guessing the kits only come with 15A receptacles.

Shop around, though...

Nice one guys, I'll do that.

Thanks for the tip on the in-use covers Aaron - I wasn't aware of that. I had a look around the hardware store and indeed, all the kits only came with 15amp GFCIs. But it wasn't too much hassle to put the kit together myself.
