Ceiling Light Bracket Attachment Problems

Post by churl » Tue Sep 17, 2019 9:27 am

Hi there,
I'm just wondering how to go about attaching a ceiling light. I have an old ceiling light mount with a giant bolt in the middle (see photo), which is making it difficult to attach the bracket to the ceiling.
Any advice is appreciated!

Can you get the bracket on OK without the threaded rod ?

If so, once the bracket is on the box, you just thread the rod into it.
The wires come down either side of the bracket.

That looks like a very old ceiling box, where the bracket attaches ONLY with the center threaded hole. There is a thing inside the round box called a "hickey" that receives a small threaded rod nipple. Screw that in a ways, then screw on the bracket so it's flush with the ceiling.

Modern light fixtures may require either the threaded rod or a couple screws. If the rod, the threaded nipple should be long enough for the light fixture through that bracket. If screws, you'll need nuts for the screws since the bracket has no tapped holes for screws—just that long slot hole.
