Plastic vs metal junction box?

Post by hardsoftrock » Sat Sep 21, 2019 4:32 pm

I need to add a junction box in the attic.

Whats better between the plastic ones like these...

Personal preference. If it will be in a high traffic area, then I recommend a metal box with metal cover, if in a low traffic area, a plastic box with a metal cover.

I prefer plastic in most cases simply because it's non-conductive, and I prefer metal covers because they have rounded corners that won't snag stuff as it goes by and break off, like the plastic ones do.

I prefer metal myself, they're just high quality, durable, and easier to work with in my opinion. But they do require a pigtailed ground if you're in the USA, which adds steps which is why builders often avoid them.

You can also make junctions in switch/receptacle boxes, too, they need not be the square boxes. The important thing is that it's a listed electrical box with cover.

Seems almost all work in Canada uses metal boxes, and Plastic in the US.

We have much more selection of metal boxes up here, and Vice-Versa for our neighbours down south.

So to answer your question "which on is better?" ... answer is YES
I'd go with whatever is cheaper (metal in my area)

That is so odd that plastic costs more up there. Counterintuitive. Steel is more expensive material and requires much more steps in fabrication costs, not to mention weight in shipping.

A blue plastic 22 cubic inch receptacle box here costs about 46 cents. But it's crap, in my opinion.

I absolutely envy the status quo you guys have of using steel. Quality is safety with electrical work.

Metal boxes may take a step or two more to implement, but they will always be stronger of the two, and have better options for clamping nm cable or mt. Plus, that ugly blue...they used to come in dark grey, that was better to look at.
