Converting switched outlet to ceiling light

Post by JCariero1963 » Sat Dec 21, 2019 3:43 pm

Hello. I have switch on wall which operates a outlet in bedroom . It has three wires and a ground . Red wire is to switch . Black wire is pigtailed to bottom of switch . White wires are all together. Its
also is feeding another outlet. Not sure if power is coming from outlet or not . I wish to add a ceiling light to this switch and keep outlet live all the time .
Thank you

Sounds straight forward. The power is coming from the recept to the switch. Since you have a neutral you can run a ceiling light from there.
You will need to replace the receptacle that is switched, since the hot tab would have been cut.

You said it's also feeding another outlet ? The switch is, or there is another outlet on the circuit ?

A second switch or a feed for another receptacle ?

A pic would be helpful

How did you measure that the circuit is live (the neutral isn't connected !)
A light up volt tester ?

Also, I think from the wiring, that that receptacle only has the One 3 wire cable in it ?
A pic of that receptacle would help too.

Also, can you determine which cable is the feed for the circuit ?

Yes the receptacle has the 3 wires . I took the red wire and joined it with the black . Ran the new wire in the box . Wired it up and its all good .
Outlet is live and new ceiling lights work with new switch. thanks for your input.
