Our local daily paper cartoonist's take on today's snowstorm... The snow's been just relentless this winter.

This was me yesterday afternoon. We finally got a day close to 0C (32F) and i moved a bit of snow then decided the fir pit in the back yard looked like a good idea to sit around for a break and a beer!

Yes, we're above freezing too finally! First day since like very early Feb, just after the polar vortex. We broke another record of having the latest sub-zero day (below -18C) this year. It's been harsh this year.

Now there's the daylight saving time switch tomorrow...

Really! You are so lucky. It's so annoying! There's a growing push to eliminate it but it will be years before that happens.

Arizona and Hawaii are the only two states that don't deal with it either.

Yeah, there's no need for it. Nobody even remembers why it exists... I've heard theories that it has to do with safety for schoolchildren, farming season, and energy conservation.

I agree, DST needs to be abolished! When I was a kid, my mother said it was for farming season, get the kids home from school while there was still light to work. Over the years it has morphed into child safety - kids traveling to/from school. I think energy conservation is simply a new twist to try to keep it around.

All it does is waste money, it is no longer a necessity, regardless of why it was implemented.

Nah, it was on the previous page and I usually always just jump to the current page. So I overlooked it initially, but I did spot it eventually.

Yeah prolly, it seems there's always a new reasons to protect the status quo of anything. But the energy conservation has been debunked, of course. If anything we're using MORE energy because of it.

It sounds like a couple of states, California and Florida in particular, are looking to switch to daylight saving time permanently. The caveat is, while the Fed allows states to opt out of participating in DST (as Arizona and Hawaii have done), they *cannot* decide to arbitrarily observe year-around DST.

So a workaround hack that states like New Hampshire are proposing is to do is switch from the Eastern Time Zone to the Atlantic Time Zone so they can accomplish the same thing.

It's fricking chaos. Just scrap the whole thing and we'll all be on normal standard time year around.

Personally I like daylight savings time. Being further north we have less sunlight in general. I work 7:00am-3:15pm. It's a real pain to work without light and the time changes in fall and spring keep sunrise happening around 7:00am so I can actually see what I'm doing.

A lot of the arguments saying it wastes money sound like BS to me. Like: 'it may lead to an increase in workplace accidents', or 'it may lead to more people wasting time at work on internet', etc.

So you know what you'd do? You'd adjust your work hours with the sunrise and sunset when you need to.

I know, I know! It makes too much sense! Lol

Nah, I like my hours how they are. I start and finish early enough that I avoid the traffic. If I started work at 8 it takes me 3x as long to drive to work.

That's because everyone's a slave to the clock. They don't work when they feel it's a good time for them to work.
