Rectangular depression in yard, with sink hole.

Post by Rmc041714 » Tue Aug 27, 2019 12:05 pm

Hi everyone, i have asked questions on here before and received great answers , so hopefully someone can help me out with another one. A grassy area next to my driveway has always been a little uneven, however lately I have noticed a rectangular depression, with a small sinkhole at one corner of it starting to develop. At first I thought it could be A problem with the sprinkler system as there are three sprinkler heads in that area, But I have ruled that out. I now think it could be an old abandoned cesspool. When I bought my house, I was told that the house had always been connected to the sewer system, but I don’t believe that to be the case . My question is, is there anyway to find out if this was properly abandoned without digging up the entire thing? And Could this depression still be possible even if it was filled in with dirt or gravel. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sure looks like a concrete tank or something ? Can you drive a rod into the ground in that area and hit anything ? A piece of 4-5' rebar would work.
It could be settling for some reason. Maybe it has never been filled and now has deteriorated to the point that some earth is settling into the cavity.
As a side note be cautious of under ground utilities when probing with the rod.

Thanks for your reply Shannon. After doing some research it appears it is an old cesspool. My concern is a possible collapse. I would hope that it was filled in properly, but if it was, why would it be creating this depression in the grass? Is there any way to tell if it was properly abandoned without digging the the whole thing up? It’s probably partially under my driveway , which makes it a bigger headache.

you could dig down to expose the top and maybe cut a hole in it to inspect ,or if you are lucky find the cover and open it up.
