Mysterious drain pipe in basement slab

Post by bobthebuilder » Fri Sep 28, 2018 11:28 am

I'm currently in the demolition phase in a basement remodel, and the previous owner built a floating floor on top of a concrete slab.

To my surprise, there's some sort of metal/iron drain pipe that was left exposed.

There's no water or fumes coming out of the pipe. I would expect it to be an ABS pipe, but this is a 100 year old house in Ontario, so there's all sorts of surprises.

Any ideas what this is? Just wanted some input before calling the plumber.

Depending on the size, probably an abandoned floor drain (2" pipe) or toilet (3" pipe).

Thanks A.Spruce!

That's what I figured. The pipe is around 2" in diameter.

You never know but it is likely some sort of drain. Could have been a bar, washing machine ,bathroom...who knows for sure. Kinda looks like you can see the concrete floor patch so that may lead you to where the end is? I would suspect it is in that corner from the slope on the pipe?

Hi Shannon,

Thanks for the reply! Now that you mention it--- that area was a bar a few decades ago. The previous owner mentioned that to me before he sold the home. Great guess!

What's the best way to cap a drain that size?

PS, thanks to your videos, I've learned quite a few tips that gave me the confidence to tackle projects. Thanks so much for taking the time to make your awesome content. You're a natural teacher.

If it's cast iron, get yourself a rubber cap with hose clamp, that's about the only way you're going to do it yourself.
