this is all new to me...2 1/2 years ago(Sept2016) I installed a Fleck 5600sxt water softener system...no problems accept for the past few weeks, the water smells like metal. Is it possible that the resin is no longer effective? How much of a job to remove old gravel, and resin and install new? Is there any test I should do prior to jumping the gun and assuming the original resin is no longer doing its job? much appreciated!

Me either, though to determine if it's the softener at fault or not, go smell the water at a backyard hose bib, this bib shouldn't be softened, only the house supply and usually one hose bib in front for the purpose of washing cars. Just depends on when/where the system was installed in relation to the rest of the plumbing.

Assuming that the incoming water is odor free, the next call would should be to a local water softener specialist.

So if the water smells that never touched the softener, then it is the water itself that has changed for some reason. At this point, you need to have it tested to know what is causing the odor and whether it is correctable and/or safe for potable use.

Before full on replacement of the resin, you could try cleaning it with ResCare RK41N All-Purpose Water Softener Cleaner or an equivalent product. You'll add 1/2c of cleaner per 1lb of resin to the brine well or salt storage tank then initiate a manual regeneration on the softener (your owner's manual should walk you through how).

This has helped my Culligan softener along with cleaning the salt storage tank which had accrued a layer of orange metal/sediment across every surface.
