B Vent drywall

Post by greg4111 » Mon Jul 01, 2019 1:59 pm

Hello. My plan is to drywall this wall but what is the code for the b vent for the hot water tank... what is the minimum clearance that it has to be from combustible material? How should I finish this wall? Attached are two pictures. Any help would be great thanks.

Well B vent chimney documents require 1"clearance to any combustable material. Drywall generally is still considered combustable so the simple answer is ...no you can not drywall right up to this vent pipe.
Now Roxul fire guard insulation is considered non combustable so it should be fine right against the pipe if you wish and if the drywall is left back you could seal to that pipe with a Fire ga=uard caulking if you wanna seal things right up. Alternatively since a 1" gap is pretty tough to fill you could cut cement board much closer and have an easier to caulk gap.

Can I put some sort of flashing on the outside just to make it look nice and then seal around that?

What is the depth requirement for the b vent to come out of the finished wall? Is there a minimum length that the pipe has to stick out? Just curious.
Thanks

They make trim collars that go around the pipe at wall penetrations.
