Alternative to saddle valve

Post by cjv140 » Tue Sep 24, 2019 11:00 am

Anyone have a better solution to a saddle valve for a humidifier copper tubing line? Mine is starting to leak, of course, and I'll be stuck with a little hole in the pipe. It's on a 3/4 inch copper line from my water heater out.

If replacing the leaking valve doesn't do the trick or you simply don't want a saddle valve, then you will have to put a tee fitting into the line so that you can plumb up a normal angle stop to the correct fitting size of your humidifier supply line.

To go from a saddle to a tee, cut out the section where the existing saddle valve is, this removes the hole, and install the copper tee. You will then stub out from the tee so that you can attach a 1/4 turn ball valve or angle stop. From there, you plumb to the humidifier. Make sure when you are buying all these parts that you have the correct threads from the valve to the humidifier line.

There are fittings for this that are way better then saddle valves.

Oh yes, I'll have to grab that. Much better than saddles.

Since I don't deal with pex, I forget that there are usually sharkbite fittings that will fit the bill. Good call Shannon.

Saddle valves are a violation of plumbing code in MN, so I imagine this is true in other places as well.

(Being against code doesn't stop stores from selling them, and people installing them!)

Yup, this applies to way too many things, cheap crap not only sells, it rules the day on non-inspected work.

It's suprising around here, Chicago is such a strong union city. Although my heating guy did throw it in on the side, so that makes sense. I just wonder about the long term lifespan of shark bite fittings, as opposed to sweat joints, especially on pex tubing.

You could do the same thing with sweat fittings an a valve if you want . Just be sure the valve has the right size connection for the humidifier line . I believe they are 1/4"
