Radon Mitigation

Post by leff1rj » Wed Dec 05, 2018 11:43 am

How many radon mitigation systems would be needed for a finished basement of 2300 square feet and adjacent crawlspace of 1200 square feet?

How is the number of systems determined?

Description:
Finished basement has one sump pit with interior and exterior perimeter drainage pipe into pit. Interior and exterior perimeter drainage pipes are also connected to an exterior drain to daylight. Therefore, sealing of sump pit and placing radon exhaust pipe in pit may not be effective. Radon exhaust pipe would most likely need to placed through concrete floor into gravel sub base and pipe sealed in concrete floor.
Adjacent crawlspace is 6' higher than basement concrete floor. Crawlspace area is not tightly sealed from finished basement area.

Would radon mitigation system also be needed in crawlspace area?

I think your local government would have to help with that information. I think they gather that data as a matter of public safety. It varies depending where you live, I've heard its pretty random where radon is and isn't.

Many new houses today are built with the means to easily add radon mitigation. As far as retrofitting old homes and answering your question about whether a crawl space needs it, I have no idea. I think only a radon specialist could answe that by measuring levels in the house.
