don't have enough clearance above my garage door

Post by mbrini » Fri Mar 01, 2019 4:27 pm

Hi i' changing my garage door and i want the torsion spring system. I have two air ducts (supply my living room right up my garage). I don't have the minimum clearance (12'') so i'm thinking:
1- Does my living room really need two air ducts?
2- If yes ,what if i remove one air duct and i install a fan booster in the other one ?
3- A transition rigid duct to flex duct will be considered?

Thanks

Where is it that you need clearance, above the door rail or at the header for the torsion spring?

If only at the header, have a transition elbow for the duct made so that you can get more clearance. If you need to move the duct, change the round duct out for a rectangular duct.

It’s above the rail. i need more space to install the cable drum.
Do you mean change both rounded air duct for one rectangular?

If you have your heart set on deleting one of the ducts, you will have to consult with an HVAC tech who can assess the requirements of your system and offer suggestions from there.

So long as you do not reduce/restrict the air flow/volume of the ducts, you can do just about whatever you like to them, hence why I suggested changing the elbows for more clearance or even the duct itself to a rectangular duct to get it higher up on the ceiling.

You can change just the one duct to rectangle if that is all the space you need, or you can do both if you desire. I would not combine or delete anything without consulting with an HVAC tech.

There are usually low clearance set ups for over head doors. Check with your supplier to see if they offer one? It may give you what you need without moving the duct.
