Furnace heat exchanger requires replacement - disconnected it!

Post by Konos » Mon Apr 15, 2019 9:26 am

Need some advice on furnace stuff. Service guy just turned off my heat saying the heat exchanger is toast and needs replacing. $600 installed. Wasn't leaking during his 15 minute test. Does this sound legit based on what you see here in the pics? The ledge looks "rusty" but its only 12 years old and gets serviced annually.

Sometimes a second opinion is in order. If you feel you're not getting a straight or accurate answer, then call in another HVAC company to assess the problem. When the second guy comes, only tell him what issue you are having, do not say what the other tech told you. If the second guy comes to the same conclusion, then you get to decide which guy gets to do the work. If the second guy DOES NOT come to the same conclusion, then share what the first tech told you and see where it goes.

None of those pictures show the heat exchanger. Even if they did, it's not something someone could diagnose over the internet.
12 years is getting up there ... It used to be that you could easily get 20, even 30 years out of them. Unfortunately these days they don't last nearly as long.

I agree with Sprucy ... worthwhile having some other company come in and get their opinion.

I think one of the symptoms of a failing heat exchanger is the release of higher PPMs of carbon monoxide. If you have a meter, or perhaps even a CO detector, it can be tool that might corroborate your initial tech's findings.

But residential heating/cooking companies do have a bad rep for suggesting repairs that are not really needed, so your skepticism is well warranted.

Hey guys, so the company I work for owns a hot water on demand company and I had one of the guys swing by to have a look. He agreed that at some point the primary/secondary heat exchanger leaked and that's where the corrosion is coming from. In any case I'll have to get it replaced as they've shut off my heat and informed the gas company so I'm not "allowed" to turn it on until repairs have been made and now its all on record. Anyway probably best to do it now - at least the parts are covered under warranty and I'm only out the $600 for labour.

Thanks for everyone's comments - it really was appreciated!
