Deck Beam Angle Cut

Post by rflaugh » Sat May 04, 2019 9:09 am

On deck beams, I usually see the bottom outside corner cut off. I assume it is for safety as much as aesthetics. I have attached a picture to show what I'm talking about. That said, I cannot find any guidance on making that cut in the codes or prescriptive guide to building decks. Is there any guidance on making this cut, i.e. minimum amount of cutoff, etc?

Thanks in advance for your time and guidance!

I would say that it's decorative cut, being so then the specifics of the cut aren't all that important. From what I'm seeing it is a 30* to 45* angle that starts at about the half way point of the member. The member in the pic looks to be a 2x6, though, regardless of the height of the member, I'd still keep the angle cut no more than 3" - 4" up from the bottom edge.

Yeah, the only reference I can find is that it is a decorative cut. If I decide to do that I would follow the guidance you suggested. Just don't want to do something like that and have the inspector take exception to it.

yup for sure just for looks. Like Spruce said I would keep the cut to a minimum. No more than half way up for sure.

Well, the final decision while framing the deck today was just to leave the decorative cut off the beam. It is fairly low to the ground so not really noticeable anyways. I thought about it, but decided to forgo the cut. Thanks again for the advice!
