Home foundation/structure question

Post by Rmc041714 » Sun Aug 18, 2019 2:22 pm

Hi everyone, I have recently purchased a home on Long Island New York that is not too far from the ocean. It is an older home that was built in 1961. Recently I have noticed that there are a lot of wall cracks in the house. Some of them appear to have been previously repaired or covered up. As of now, the basement wall doesn’t seem to be bowing, however I have notice one crack in the basement wall that moves diagonal from the basement window. Also there are older cracks on the basement floor that seem to have been sealed up. Additionally I have hardwood floors that are uneven and sloped in some places. Any advice if this is more of a foundation/structure issue , or normal house settling? Thanks so much in advance.

It is really hard to tell from pictures alone . What I see though does not seem to concerning. If the cracks start to change or walls are moving horizontally I would be more concerned. If you feel things are changing and you are concerned I would have a pro come and assess things

Thanks for your response Shannon. In regards to the crack in the basement wall, how would you recommend fixing that? Is it something major?

From what I can tell in the picture it’s nothing major. If it’s not changing and staying basically the same simply use a product like “big stretch” caulking fo fill the crack.
