Window install help needed

Post by amistybleu » Fri Jul 14, 2017 2:48 pm

Hi, I have a question about window installation

I have a manufactured home that has T1-11 siding and directly behind that is the wall cavity with insulation. the current windows are original from 1988 and screw through the T1-11 and then in to the 2x6 studs. I have purchased new windows for the home (Jeld-Wen 4500) with the nailing flange. what is the best method to install given the fact that there is no plywood or OSB behind the T1-11.

Thank You

Well about the best is to install them right over the T1-11 as well and then use some 1/4 pine or something to make trim that will install over the nail fin. You will need to notch the back side to fit around the thickness of the nail fin to allow the trim to sit nice against the T1-11. Then run a bead of Caulk around the perimeter as well.

Thank you. is there any flashing techniques I can use or due to the nature of the construction just put them in them in to the untreated opening. the current windows have nothing, just windows in a hole with caulk.

Tough to really do much when the nail fin is on top of the exterior siding. Silicone under the nail flange and seal the wood trim is about it really

Some people are telling me I should cut off the top nailing flange in order to put a drip edge between the stud and the t111, what do you think about this?

Thank you

do not cut off the nail fin, you will have bigger issues. How have you decided to install the window? Over the T1-11 and wood trim to cover it?

I am going to install window over T111 using OSI Quad max sealant and then cover flange with flashing tape followed by trim of 1/4 pine that I will prime before install and the caulk with the OSI

I was also thinking I should do the sides and bottom of the rough opening with flashing tape but I would have to flash over the T111 and not sure if that is a good idea or not.

Thank you

So for the drip cap install it over the window on top of the nail fin. Then flashing tape over that. Flashing the bottom of the opening is a good idea to create a sill pan ,then flash over the nail fin on sides and top

Should I nail the drip cap or simply flash it to secure it

either will work, the trim will also hold it in place.

I have never used it but it looks like it is intended for this use.
