Stripping wooden deck furniture?

Post by RPD » Fri Sep 08, 2017 10:27 am

I need to refinish some wooden deck furniture. The normal procedure, of course, is to just powerwash it and restain. But it looks to me like the previous stain was solid; what she wants me to put on is transparent. After powerwashing, there is still a lot of the old stain on the wood (see photo). How about stripping? Anything wrong with that?
And then, after staining, I've read that stain provides color, but no protection, so I should finish with a clear protective finish. So a couple of coats of exterior spar poly?

You can try stripper, odds are you'll be sanding to clean up the wood.

As to the finish, follow the directions on the label. Since this is outdoor furniture, you need to make sure that all products you use will stand up to the environment they are in.
If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Ya sanding is likely the route you will end up having to take. Use exterior stain ,some do not need an additional protection some do ,so read the labels to verify.
