What is the best (preferred) method for attaching drywall to interior studs.... nails or screws?

Either are fine, screws tend to hold better.

If you go with screws, either get yourself a driver drill or use a magnetic tip holder with a cupped driver tip that both acts as a depth stop and cups the drywall to accept mud over the fastener better.

Coarse thread for wood framing, fine thread for metal framing
