Shower Arm Broke Off

Post by Admin » Thu Feb 08, 2018 10:15 pm

Well that’s weird. I went to unscrew the shower arm because it turned somewhat easily. I thought I’d put on new Teflon tape and reinstall but it had other ideas.

Part of it broke off inside the threaded doohickey inside the wall. Has this ever happened to anyone else? It seems quite odd.

It’s all fixed now but... seems weird to me.

Fairly typical with plumbing, especially with hard and/or acidic water. At least it was the neck that twisted off and not the pipe in the wall.

Im surprised because your house is only what 10-15 yrs old?? Just a cheap part I suppose . I see that many times in homes that are 25 yrs old but then houses older like from the 70s with original parts seem to be better quality and won't rust off like that. Things get made cheaper every year.

I wonder if those shower arm pipes are made from that crappy pot/white metal, then electroplated with whatever finish (chrome, brass, or whatever). I bet that's why, that is very soft metal that can shatter or crumble.

11 years old. The replacement appeared to be identical and it does seem like cheap pot metal that is chromed.

Is this where I go into my old guy rant about they don't build things like they used to? that is true for so many things these days...

I think the key also is to not over-tighten that piece, as surely that will deform the threads--and in the case of that pot metal break chunks of it off. You have to use a strap-wrench anyway because Channellock pliers will scratch up the finish.

It's tricky, sometimes, because the piece has to be in a particular orientation. It's hard when it's in that orientation and it's too loose--but if you turn it another 360 degrees it's too tight. Sometimes you have to take it out and start over, or add more ply's of teflon tape so that you can work up enough resistance to the point where the orientation is where you need it to be and it's snug.

You're right, they do! Well, at least some of the new shower heads are chromed plastic.
