Drop Ceiling

Post by bobmurphy » Fri Jul 06, 2018 1:37 pm

I have a room 12' wide x 32' long. Floor joists run in direction of the width so
my main tracks will need to be 32'. I want 2' x 4' panels. Should I go
with 2 mains and 4' crosses or 5 mains and 2' crosses (and why)?

Thanks for coming to the forum. By posting questions here and having them answered it may help others with similar questions later on as well.
I would go with 2 mains with 4’ tees between them.

I second having 2 mains and 4' crosses, a whole lot less work. You'll probably find a whole lot less cutting and waste of both track and ceiling tiles as well.
If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Thanks! With only the two mains, there will be far less "support" to the joists. Will that not be a problem? Would I need to tie closer than 2 to 3 feet apart?

No you will be fine this way unless you are installing heavy fluorescent lights then you may want 5 mains but even that is likely over kill . No one really uses those anymore though anyways.
