Order of tasks while remodeling the room

Post by gsahlot » Sun Aug 05, 2018 8:40 pm

Hi Guys,

I have a room with no floor coverings, and baseboards, trims removed, so I think it is ready to get remodeled. I was and am thinking to go in the following order:

1. Paint the ceiling
2. Paint inside of closet
3. Paint the walls
4. Install retrofit window
5. Install floor
6. Install baseboards
7. Install window trims and closet trims and door trims in any order.
8. Install new door slab for room's door.
9. Install shelves in closet and then install sliding door slab.

I have someone take a look if they can do the windows and they told me that I should do the pain last in above steps. So I am little confused about my order of steps above. Is above not the right order?

Thanks!

Seems ok to me but you will need door casing installed before baseboards. The side casing will go to floor and baseboards will butt to it.
If carpet is being used for flooring there is a pretty good chance they will scuff the walls a little while installing it. So when carpet being done I will usually paint walls after carpet. At least the final coat anyways.

IMHO, you want ALL construction work done first, get the window in, walls modifications done, and drywall repairs done. If your doors, trim, and baseboards are to be painted, install those too, if they are to be stained, then paint first, then install the trim after it has been stained and finished.

With baseboards, if you are installing carpet, keep the base 1/2" off the floor. You will have to touch up scuffs here and there after carpet, but it's easier than painting everything over the carpet. If you are installing hard surface flooring, wait until the floor is in before installing the base. Also, in this instance, paint the base before you install it, because it is far easier to touch up nails and caulk joints than it is to do everything after the fact.

Paint the walls BEFORE you install the floor, saves you tarping the floor and worrying about drips and damage while painting.

I am going to use laminate flooring every where. So I guess I could go:
1. Install retrofit windows
2. With all baseboards, trims removed I.e. with the room in current state, paint the whole thing I.e. inside the closet, ceiling and walls.
3. Install door casing and closet door trims.
4. Install baseboards and window trims
5. Install doors

And before 3, 4 and 5, paint baseboards, trims and doors separately in their detached state.

1 - windows

3 - paint all walls/ceilings
4 - paint all trim/baseboards, door jambs
5 - install window/door trim
6 - If spraying doors, do it off the hinge, set up in one room (before wall paint) to paint all doors at the same time. If hand painting doors, leave them on the hinge and paint them in place.
7 - Install floors
8 - install baseboards and touch up

As you can see everyone does these steps differently. Part of the difference is habit. I never install baseboard to have carpet tucked under. I always prep my baseboards and trim and install after flooring and then touch up after . In your case this is the way you will have to do it as well. You can't have any baseboard or door trim on before installing laminate.
I think Spruce missed the fact that you are doing laminate.

Nope, saw that, listed base and touch up last. 8-)

So how are you installing the laminate flooring with the baseboard on? You must use a quarter round or cove attached to the baseboard after wards to cover the edge of the flooring . I may do that if it was existing baseboard and removing it would mean damaging walls ect. but I would never add another trim to new trim if I did not have to does not make sense to me. If i can install the laminate and then install the baseboard afterwards i would every time. Most laminates require a 1/4" gap around the room perimeter so I would install it then use 3/4" baseboards to cover the edges.

I'm not, floors first (item #7), and base last (item #8)

The only time I install base first is when carpet is going down because I find it easier to touch up after the carpet installers than to have to paint over carpet. 8-)
