Cabinets on concrete, backsplash on dry wall?

Post by New2DIY » Mon Aug 06, 2018 4:21 pm

Hi All!

I’m a newlywed, my husband and I are currently undergoing our first kitchen renovation which we hired a contractor for.

The kitchen is in a condo unit which is in a condo apartment building.

The contractor installed the wall cabinets directly on concrete and the base cabinets on top of ungrouted tile.

The contractor has cut pieces of drywall and adhered them to the exposed parts of the concrete that the backsplash will go onto. Is this normal? The drywall is not blue drywall and about 1/2 inch think. It covers part of the quartz counter top, the outlets sink in slightly (since they are behind the drywall).

Is the drywall solution normal since the cabinets are on concrete? I’ve never seen this before.

Thanks so much for any and all help!

No, your contractor's methods do not make sense to me.

What is your backsplash going to be?

Hi @A.Spruce!

The backsplash is mosaic porcelain tile, I believe it is mesh mounted.

1 - white drywall is not rated for wet or tile, it should be green board at the very least.
2 - You say it is a cement wall, perfect base for tile, why was drywall needed? If it's a spacer, then hardibacker or other cement based product should have been used.
3 - I would consult with a local tile installer and get a second opinion on the way your current contractor is doing things.
4 - I'm NOT a tile guy, I don't know what the latest and greatest products or methods are, however, I've got a pretty good nose for "right" and "wrong", and this has the distinct aroma of being wrong to me. hence why I recommend getting a second opinion.

This is kinda odd. Why not have the drywall on the walls before the cabinets. I would imagine there are lots of gaps and spaces beteeen the ends of cabinets and drywall edges? This is a lot more work to fill and make look good.
As for the standard drywall it really is fine ina kitchen and fine under tile backsplash . You don’t get the same conditions as a bathroom or shower.
I understand wanting drywall over the concrete wall to have a nicer finish but for the life of me I can’t believe they installed it after the cabinets.
I hope other receptacles on the wall look better then the one in the back splash area. At least in the backsplash area that can be fix (covered) once tiles are installed.
I would say this is not normal what they have done, at least no kind of normal I can relate to.
