how should I rebuild day care outdoor choo-choo train

Post by RPD » Tue Aug 07, 2018 9:40 am

Attache are photos of the remains of an outdoor preschool choo-choo train that I've been asked to put back together. I'm thinking that plywood is a bad idea, need to use boards, but is there a plywood that will stand up to outside use? Or suggestions on what type of wood for the boards?

Thanks,

Use marine grade plywood. Cost wise, you're probably better off to just rebuild it as it is, it will last for another 3-5 years and they'll have to rebuild it again.

Because kids are playing on it I would stay away from pressure treated, even though it will be painted, it's still not a good idea to be handling the stuff.

If you use lumber, you are going to lose a lot of the aesthetics that plywood provides. I've not had much luck with glues exposed to weather, so creating your own large panels out of wood isn't likely going to get you anywhere either.
If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Yes I agree really plywood is the only thing that will work good unless you have access to 3/4 Poly sheets (like puck board) but that will cost a fortune.

In the high wear areas if you can incorporate 2x lumber they will take the abuse better for sure.

I just meant dimensional lumber 2x4,2x6,2x8,2x10 what ever works for your needs.

What about sealing the edges with some kind of epoxy?

All I can really suggest is fill any exposed voids in the edges with a resin or good exterior glue or even exterior caulking. Then use a good quality exterior primer (like Kilz 2) and an exterior acrylic paint. If you can still find oil paint in your area then I would use that.
